About Kano State Library Board

The Kano State Library Board was established in 1969 following the creation of Kano State, as part of the government’s commitment to education, literacy, and knowledge dissemination. At the time, there was a growing recognition of the critical role libraries play in fostering intellectual development, promoting a culture of reading, and providing citizens with free access to reliable information. The establishment of the Board was therefore aimed at ensuring that both urban and rural communities had equal opportunities to acquire knowledge that could empower them socially, economically, and academically.

In its early years, the Board operated with a single headquarters library located in the Kano metropolis. This library was stocked with general reading materials, reference books, and newspapers, and it became a hub for students, researchers, and civil servants. Over time, as the population of Kano expanded and literacy campaigns gained momentum, the Board widened its scope and began setting up branch libraries in local government areas across the state. These branch libraries provided residents especially those in rural communities with access to books and reading facilities, ensuring inclusivity in education and information access.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the Board played a pivotal role in supporting government education policies, especially during the era of Universal Primary Education (UPE) and later the Universal Basic Education (UBE) programs. The libraries served as resource centers for pupils, teachers, and adult learners, contributing significantly to literacy development across Kano State. They also provided space for adult education programs and literacy campaigns targeted at reducing illiteracy among women and out-of-school children.

By the 1990s, the Board had grown into a well-recognized information center, supporting secondary school students, tertiary institutions, civil servants, and the general reading public. The Library Board’s services expanded to include children’s libraries, mobile library services for hard-to-reach areas, and specialized sections for newspapers, government documents, and reference materials.

The arrival of the digital age in the 2000s brought about new challenges and opportunities. With the global shift toward electronic resources and the internet, the Kano State Library Board began to modernize its operations. The introduction of computers, internet connectivity, and e-resources marked a new phase in its service delivery. The e-library sections provided access to online journals, educational websites, and databases, which greatly benefited researchers, students, and professionals in need of current and global information resources.

Today, the Board has evolved into a network of public libraries strategically located across Kano State, providing a wide range of services that include:

Reading and lending services for books and journals.

Reference services to support research and academic work.

ICT and e-library services, which give users access to online resources, electronic journals, and databases

Children’s library services to instill a love for reading at an early age.

Outreach programs that take literacy and information resources to rural communities through mobile library vans.

Over more than five decades of service, the Kano State Library Board has remained a key driver in bridging the knowledge gap between the educated and non-educated population in Kano. It has continuously provided materials that support education, civic awareness, vocational development, and lifelong learning.

With the advent of digital technology, the Library Board is no longer restricted to print collections. It continues to modernize its services by adopting automation systems, e-resources, and digital platforms that allow users to access information anywhere and anytime. This transition is in line with global best practices and ensures that the library remains relevant in the 21st century
